Subject of the commemorative coin:
Historic Centre of Córdoba (first in the series 'UNESCO World Heritage List')
Description of the design:
The coin shows the columns and rounded arches of the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. The coin commemorates the first Spanish site to be included (1984) on the UNESCO World Heritage List - the historic centre of Cordoba. The coin features the 'forest of pillars' of the Great Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, one of the most famous and oldest examples of Islamic architecture in Europe. Built between the 8th and 10th centuries, the Mosque was later converted into a Christian cathedral and has undergone successive transformations. The mint mark 'M' is on the left. The issuing country 'ESPAÑA' and the year 2010 are at the bottom. The twelve stars of the European Union are depicted on the outer ring.
The coin is the first in a new series of coins dedicated to Spanish sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, one of which will be issued each year starting in 2010
