Subject of the commemorative coin:
international year of sustainable tourism for development

Description of the design:
In the centre is a globe surrounded by waves, with a circle on the right containing the letter A, the mark of the designer, Andrew Lewis. In an arc above the globe is "TURISMO SOSTENIBILE", in an arc below it "SAN MARINO" and the year "2017". On the right are the initials of the engraver Uliana Pernazza, "UP INC", and on the left the letter "R" of the Italian mint that struck the coin.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The concept of sustainable tourism is a form of travel that respects the earth, does not interfere with the natural, social and artistic environment and does not hinder the growth of social and economic activities. It is opposed to mass tourism and generally stimulates the weakest economies. In order to promote a new mentality and encourage tourists to respect the environment, the Republic of San Marino has dedicated a €2 commemorative coin to this theme, designed by Canadian designer Andrew Lewis. The coin’s outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
