Subject of the commemorative coin:
ten years of the euro

Description of the design:
This coin was designed by Helmut Andexlinger of the Austrian Mint and chosen by citizens and residents of the euro area as a common commemorative coin for 2012. The inner part depicts the world with a euro symbol placed in the centre, symbolising the international prominence that the euro has acquired over the past decade. The euro symbol is surrounded by elements symbolising the importance of the coin to ordinary people (represented by a family), the financial world (the Eurotower), trade (a ship), industry (a factory), the energy sector and research and development (two wind turbines). If you look closely, you will see the designer’s initials “AH” between the ship and the Eurotower. The upper and lower edges of the inner part of the coin feature the issuing country and the years “2002-2012” respectively. The coin is issued by all euro area countries. The coin’s outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
