Subject of the commemorative coin:
Portugal's participation in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics
Description:
The design features the symbols of the Portuguese Olympic Committee. The design was approved by the Council in 2020, as the coin was originally scheduled to be issued in mid-2020. However, Casa da Moeda and the Olympic Committee agreed to postpone its issuance from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in line with the new Games calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, some design details of the text have been updated, in particular the abbreviated two-digit format for the year 2020 (using an ellipsis: “Tóquio'20”), followed by the year of issuance 2021, and finally the author's name next to the mint mark. The coin's outer ring features the twelve stars of the European flag.
