Description:
The coin shows a primitive figure that merges into the € symbol. The coin is intended to express the idea that a single currency and, by extension, the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is the final chapter in the long history of trade and economic integration in Europe. The coin, which will be issued by each country in the euro area, bears the name of the country and the inscription 'EMU 1999-2009' in the respective language(s). The 12 stars of the European Union are on the outer ring.
The design was chosen from five shortlisted designs by European Union citizens who cast their votes online. The design was created by George Stamatopoulos, an engraver at the Coin Department of the Bank of Greece.
