Description of the design:
The coin depicts the Temples of Ġgantija on the island of Gozo. Ġgantija is a megalithic temple complex from the Neolithic period. It is one of the world’s oldest free-standing structures, as well as one of the oldest religious structures. Built around the 36th century BC, Ġgantija predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. At the top right is the inscription “ĠGANTIJA TEMPLES” with the dates “3800-3200 BC” underneath. At the bottom left is the name of the issuing country “MALTA” with the year of issuance “2016” underneath, flanked by the mint master’s mark and the mint mark. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
