UNESCO's Human and Biosphere Program - Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve
Description of the design:
The design depicts the characteristic environment of the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve, part of the UNESCO Human and Biosphere Programme’s Global Network of Biosphere Reserves: remote islands in a unique bird lake, the largest wetland in Lithuania, and the characteristic animals that live there. In the foreground, a bittern tries to catch a fire-bellied toad floating in the water. The Russians depicted on the right side show an aquatic warbler, above which fly a flock of cranes and a mute swan, which are the symbolic animals of the reserve. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions LIETUVA (Lithuania), ŽUVINTAS and UNESCO, the year of issuance (2021) and the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint. The design was created by Eglé Ratkute and Ernestas Žemaitis. The outer ring of the coin features the 12 stars of the European flag.
