Subject of the commemorative coin:
Varazdin

Description:
The design shows Varaždin Castle (12th - 16th century). Varaždin was first mentioned in 1181. After being severely affected by the Mongol invasions in 1242, it was rebuilt into a royal fortress, which would later become known as the Old Town. Its appearance has changed over the centuries: first it was a strong medieval castle surrounded by water-filled moats, then the main fortress and arsenal of the Slavonian Military Frontier and the Varaždin military headquarters, and then a beautiful Renaissance castle. Today, the Old Town is the most important and impressive historical building in the city of Varaždin and a monument in the highest category of Croatian architectural heritage. Furthermore, the name of the issuing country “HRVATSKA” (Croatia), the year of issuance “2024” and the words “STARI GRAD VARAŽDIN” (the old town of Varaždin) appear in an arc at the top and bottom of the design. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
