The coin depicts Charles de Gaulle in profile at two different times. The profile in the background shows General Charles de Gaulle in uniform during his call for resistance on 18 June 1940 or during the liberation of Paris. The profile in the foreground depicts Charles de Gaulle during his second presidential term. The word RF is partially integrated into the Cross of Lorraine, which General de Gaulle chose in 1940 as the symbol of Free France. The dates of his birth and death, and the year of issue, are also inscribed in the Cross of Lorraine. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
