Description of the design:
The inner part of the coin depicts a hand groping around an open book. Above the index finger, which points to the vertical inscription “LOUIS BRAILLE 1809-2009”, are two birds, which represent free knowledge. At the top right is “RI”, the indication of the issuing country, and at the bottom right is the mint mark “R”. Below the book is Braille’s name in the script he invented. At the very bottom are the initials “MCC” of the designer Maria Carmela Colanéri. The 12 stars of the European flag are depicted along the outer ring of the coin.
