Subject of the commemorative coin:
2500 years of the Battle of Thermopylae


Description of the design:
The design features an ancient Greek helmet. Inscribed in Greek on the inside are “2500 YEARS SINCE THE BATTLE OF THERMOPYLAE” and “HELLENIC REPUBLIC”. Also in the background is the year of issue “2020” and a palmette (the mint mark of the Greek Mint). The monogram of the artist (George Stamatopoulos) is visible on the right below the helmet. Although the Battle of Thermopylae ended in defeat for the Greeks, the battle remains a timeless symbol of heroic resistance. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
