Simone Veil
Description of the design:
The design features a portrait of Simone Veil, an icon in the fight for women’s rights. Simone Veil, born Jacob, died in June 2017 at the age of 89. She survived deportation to Auschwitz and became one of the most important figures in the construction of Europe. From 1979 to 1982, she was the first elected President of the European Parliament. She fought to decriminalize abortion, and in 1975, a law named after her was passed. In 2008, she was elected as a member of the Académie française. Her deportation registration number appears on her collar. The European Parliament is depicted in the background, with the inscriptions of her name, the dates of her birth and death, the country designation “RF”, the year of issuance “2018” and the mint marks. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
