Subject of the commemorative coin:
Blue of France
Description of the design:
For a hundred years, the cornflower has been the flower of remembrance and solidarity in France. Its origins lie in the desire to help soldiers who were wounded during the 1914-1918 war. This little flower quickly became the symbol of the entire French nation and its gratitude for the sacrifices made by soldiers to defend their country and their ideals. To this day, the “Bleuet de France” continues to provide moral and financial support to veterans and victims of past and present wars, as well as to victims of terrorism. The cornflower also serves to pass on ideals and values such as respect, peace and tolerance to younger generations. These remembrance activities honour those who fought and continue to fight for our freedom. The design features the cornflower at its centre. The words “Le Bleuet de France, fleur de mémoire et de solidarité” (“Bleuet de France”, flower of remembrance and solidarity) are written around it. The design also features the dates “1918-2018” as well as the inscription “RF” and the mint marks. The coin’s outer ring depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
