Subject of the commemorative coin:
70th Anniversary of D-Day
Description of the design:
At the top, both a landing craft and a tank gun are visible in the forms of the word “D-DAY”. Above the tank gun are the dates 1944-2014 and at the bottom is the inscription “70e anniversaire du débarquement” (70th anniversary of the landing). The distinctive boot prints of the American, British and Canadian soldiers are washed away by a wave and gradually erased. The lines of poetry by Verlaine used as a code for the start of the landing are reproduced in the wave: “Les sanglots longs des violons de l'automne blessent mon cœur d'une langueur monotone”. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
