Subject of the commemorative coin:
200th anniversary of the Finnish National Bank
Description of the design:
The commemorative coin, issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the Bank of Finland, was designed by artist Hannu Veijalainen and features Finland's national bird, the swan. In addition, the inner part of the coin features "2011", the year of issue, and "1811", the year in which Tsar Alexander I of Russia decreed that an "Exchange, Loan and Deposit Office" be established in Turku, Finland. It was Finland's first bank and eventually became the Bank of Finland, which moved to Helsinki in 1819. The Bank began to function as a central bank in the second half of the 19th century, after Finland obtained its own monetary unit and commercial banks were established in the country. At the bottom of the inner ring is the designation of the issuing country, "FI", and the mint mark. The coin's outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union flag.
