The coin shows the Baroque church of St. Michaelis, popularly called the “Michel”. It is a symbol of the city and the federal state of Hamburg, as expressed in the inscription below the image. The year of issue, 2008, the 12 stars of the European Union and the words 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' are around the outer ring. The mint mark “A”, “D”, “F”, “G” or “J” is at the top right of the coin and the initials of the designer “OE” (Erich Ott) at the bottom right.
